I am not sure about the exact reason but can make some guess – the God (Shiva) is usually smeared with White colored Ashes (Vibuti) and Goddess (Sakthi) is with red colored KumKum in Southern Indian temples. So, the walls may have stripes with both red and white to indicate God and Goddess, inside.
